HYDROCARBONS, - Coggle Diagram
HYDROCARBONS
WHAT IS THEIR FUNCTION? They serve as fuel and lubricants as well as raw materials for the production of plastics, fibres, rubbers (elastic substance obtained from the exudations of certain tropical plants (natural rubber) or derived from petroleum and natural gas (synthetic rubber). ), solvents, explosives and industrial chemicals.
-
WHAT ARE HYDROCARBONS? these are organic chemical compounds they are only composed of the elements carbon (C)and hydrogen (H). Hydrocarbons are the principal constituents of petroleum and natural gas
HOW DO THEY WORK? the carbon atoms join together to form the framework of the compound, and the hydrogen atoms attach to them in many different configurations
TYPES OF HYDROCARBONS
Alkenes
Alkanes known as olefins are an unsaturated compound, that need to have at least one hydrogen and one carbon and they are bonded by a double bond. They have a higher level of radioactiveness due to its double bond.
Alkynes
Alkynes are organic compounds composed of one or more molecules of carbon connected by a triple bond. They are classified as unsaturated compounds.
Alkanes
They are organic compounds that only consist of mono-bonded carbon & hydrogen atoms. Their general formula is = CnH2n+2.
They are the simplest and less reactive hydrocarbon,
Aromatic
Arenes are aromatic hydrocarbons, they are referred to as their pleasant scent. They have unique delocalized electrons forming sigma bonds. (They look like rings).
