Phase One: Recognition

The teacher (or parent, administrator, or counselor) recognizes a consistent need or problem exhibited by the student. Recognition of a discrepancy ability for his or her age may signal the need for additional academic or behavioral assistance.
Meeting with the parents or guardians:
The teacher provides examples of the student’s work and/or anecdotal classroom notes regarding the student’s needs.
In the meeting, the teacher and the parent/guardian should explore the following:

The teacher documents all actions taken and strategies used to assist the student in the classroom and the impact on the student.
