Specific learning disability includes disorders related to understanding or utilizing written and/or spoken language. The psychological processes impacted can manifest in a variety of forms: listening, thinking, speaking, reading, writing, spelling and making math calculations. This very large, broad category includes brain injury, dyslexia, and aphasia. This area does not include physical impairments, such as blindness or deafness, which may impact the skills involved in learning and understanding language, nor does it include emotional disturbance or environmental/economic factors that may disadvantage an individual. ADHD is not a learning disability in and of itself, however the impact of a person's behavior upon learning and applying language allows for accommodations as part of this disability category within "Section 504."
