2026 Minton Midterm Review:
Newly elected members of congress:
(Significant states)
Michigan:
Not a flipped seat but a very left Democrat win for Senator Abdul El-Sayed. Shows party members moving to extremes.
Kansas:
Flipped seat to Democrat (very suprising). Senator Adam Hamilton.
Alaska:
Still up in the Air........
Texas:
Flipped seat to Democrat (extremely surprising!) Senator James Talarico. Was running against Trump chosen and Elon Musk endorsed Ken Paxton.
Maine:
Flipped seat to Democrat. Senator Troy Jackson. Was running against centrist Republican Susan Collins who often defies Trump.
South Carolina:
Flipped seat to Democrat. Senator Annie Andrews.
Ohio:
Flipped seat to Democrat. Senator Sherrod Brown.
Iowa:
Flipped seat to Democrat. Senator Josh Turek.
North Carolina:
Flipped seat to Democrat. Senator Roy Cooper.
Why did the Republicans perform so poorly?
Trumps war in Iran caused significant economic consequences, impacting the cost of living, groceries and oil. This was at the fore front of many voters minds.
Poor choice of candidates, Ken Paxton in particular is not the best of speakers or popular.
In the 2024 election 43% of Latinos supported Trump, as a result, when Gerrymandering, Trump used this to target large areas of Latinos to promote as many seats as possible. However, following ICE raids and civil unrest, many Latino votes flipped and the Gerrymandering worked against Trumps favour.
Moral issues, the destruction of the white house, war in Iran, war in Venezuela, Epstein and controversies.
What impact this will have on US politics in the next two years?
May attempt a trial of impeachment against Trump, however, whilst well-meaning is unlikely to be successful.
However, major political differences within the democrat party could make it harder to provide a united front.
Severe limitations on proposed legislation, as both the Senate and the House will work to check the executive and Trump.
Why did the Democrats perform so well?
Maybe not so much a Democrat win than a Republican loss? However, it was unlikely for them to have won the senate and through doing this it highlights the desire for change in America.
People were ready for change after disagreeing with many of Trump's decisions and policies, and chose to vote Democrat to limit and restrict the Republicans power.
Good choice of candidates, shout out to James Talarico, having to appeal to Democrats and centre Republicans.
The 2026 Midterms resulted in a 'Blue Tsunami' with both the senate and the house being taken under Democrat control.
