Encouragement of embracing suffering and pain rather than forcing…
Encouragement of embracing suffering and pain rather than forcing artificial happiness and optimism.
Hansif Abdurraqib, "In Defense of Despair
Experiences of despair
HOPE
"The author mentions on page 4, "yes, I did not want to get out of bed this morning but there was a sinle long shard of sunlight that stumbled in through a tear of my curtains." This shows the bit of hope/optimism point of view that the author has even the small things can give motivation and hope.
ANXIENTY
The author poses a question "what is keeping you alive today?" This reflects anxiety because the author asks what gets them through TODAY. Not tomorrow or a week. This shows the uncertainty, question, about what happens ahead.
DEPRESSION
The author mentions that they joined a group and could not stop their pain. An elder showed up and spoke to the author and gave them a new meaning on life. “Your pain is unique, because it’s yours. And you get to
have that. But, when pressed up against all of the pain in the whole
wide world, it isn’t special."
OPTISMISM
The author peaks about how despair does not have to be the end point but somewhat to overcome and to spend time with the people who love you. "I have black elders in my life whom I love dearly."

Christina Sharpe, "The Shapes of Grief"
Grief
When discussing the horrors that Palestinians are forced to endure in Gaza, Sharpe insists that instead of staying quiet, "witnessing is a refusal to be silent in the face of genocide."
This means that by speaking out about and documenting the atrocities, people are actively making a stand
Sharpe talks about how people are forced to deal with tragedy like war, climate destruction, and systemic violence everyday.
