Use Assistive and Instructional Technology
Definitions and rationale
"Use technology" is too vague to effectively guide practice
Need to understand how techonology impacts student performance on a wide range of tasks
Helps teachers be conscientious and planful in matching assisitive technology to students' individual needs and select instructional technology solutions that are accessible for all students
Assistive techonology can include a devide and/or a service as defined by IDEA
Related to function rather than any disability category and addresses the entire range of student needs
AT is about getting students ready for life after the K-12 system
AT is a key part of providing a free appropriate public education to students with an IEP
IEP implications
AT must be considered during the devleopment/revision of students' IEP
Three outcomes of consideration
The student can progress without AT
The IEP states the needed AT
More info is needed
Accessibility of IT
Designed to facilitate successful teaching and learning practices
Most impactful when ocmbined with practices for differentiating and personalizing learning experiences
Digitial accessibility is essential to ensure independence and participation
Follows four principles - POUR
Operable - material provides options for ineraction through keyboards, gestures, or voice controls
Understandable - material is presented in logical and consistent manner, with clear language and scaffolds
Perceivable - students can use multple senses to access information
Robust - material works across devices and with specialized technology
Frameworks for implementing AT and IT
SETT
Environment - team should consider all settings where the student interacts throughout the day to determine needed supports
Tasks - within environments the team should determine the range of tasks and expectations placed on the student
Student - center the individual as focus of decision making regarding technology implementation
Tools - after the team all these things, needed tools can be identifed
UDL - Universal Design for Learning
Learners vary in what they find motivating - the why
How they take in and process info - the what
How they are able to respond and demostrate understanding - the how
UDL provides multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression
Help students become expert learners who are knowledgeable, goal directed, and motivated
