WAVES (11/03), Silent but deadly - Coggle Diagram
WAVES (11/03)
Different waves
-
Longitudinal waves
- Pushup waves
- Compress and decompress as they traveled like a coiled spring
- energy being transmitted not the matter
-
Orbital waves
- interface waves
- Ocean surface waves
Combination of progressive and longitudinal waves
- Waves will only bring vertical motion (up and down movement)
Circular orbital motion
- particles move in a circular motion
Characteristics
- Diameter of orbital motion decreases with depth of water
- wave base = 1/2 length
Physical traits: all waves share the same basic characteristicsAnatomy
- crest
- through
- wave height
- wave amplitude
II. Steepness
- wave height divided by wave lengt
- same wave height will result in high steepness if the wavelength
- e.g. tsunami - high wavelength
III. Wave period and frequency
- Wave period - how long between each crest
- e.g. tsunami
Wave types
- Wind generated: Most ocean waves generated by winds
- capillary waves - ripples, wind generated initial stress on sea surface
- gravity waves - more energy transferred to ocean; trochoidal waveform as crests become pointed
e.g. bigger oceans/bodies of water = less frequent waves (?)

Discontinuity in the ocean surface
- Earthquakes (tsunamis)
- Landslades
-Raindrops
A series of long-period waves with very long wavelenth resulting from seismic events like earthquakes, underwater landslides, or volcanic eruptions
Tsunami
- seismic sea waves
- Long wavelengths (>200 km or 125 miles)
- Behaves as a shallow water wave
- Encompasses entire water column regardless of depth
- Sea level can rise up to 40 meters when a tsunami reaches shore
- most occur in the Pacific
- more earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
- Damaging to coastal areas and loss of human lives
Tsunami Watch - issued when potential for tsunami existsTunami Warning - unusual wave activity verified
- Evacuate people
- Move ships from harbors into deep waters
-
-
Surf Zone
-
Wave Reflection
- Eaves and wave energy bouned back from barrieer
-
-
Wave Generation
- Disturbing force - causes waves to form
- Wind blowing across the ocean
