Understanding your character's thoughts and emotions will make you a better actor
THOUGHTS
: Character's personal beliefs, objectives, self reflections, justifications, backstory, personal obstacles and desires.
OBJECTIVE
: What keeps your character in the room, why aren't they leaving, if so why?
Guides actors through scenes
An actor without a plan is simply lost
Would you put ingredients in a bowl for no reason? No. You would do it with a clear outcome in mind. This is the same when you step into an acting role.
Objectives motivate a character's actions
The Lost Puppy
: Many actors struggle to bring truth to their characters. They tend to play the emotion, rather than objective.
Focusing internally distracts from reacting truthfully to other actors.
Opposing objectives create conflict.
Conflict will only occur when otheres are dedicated to their own outcomes.
This reflects the epitome of the human condition
The more conflict actors find, the more interesting the performance will be
Actors must search trough the script for clues, to make it realistic.
Three types of objectives
: Scene, Main, Super Objective. By reacting each step, you are closer to the next.
Main
: Duration of script.
Scene
: Smaller units of urgency determined by circumstances of the scene.
Super Objective
: Would span across much of your character's life.
Selecting strong objectives
Triangle of needs
: Spiritual
Needs
Ultimate
. Fulfillment Needs
Beauty Needs
Cognitive Needs
Ego Needs
Social Neds
Security Needs
Body Needs
We respond to these needs with thoughts on how to satisfy them. Beliefs can come into this as well. For example if you are starving, you will have to eat, but you may have ideas of "good" or "bad" food.
Once lower needs are met, you could respond to higher. Whatever is the top priority should be met first. This will have some needs overpowering the rest, some will be more present.
Must be strongly routed in human needs. This also creates strong recognizability for your objective, therefore strengthening your audience's empathy with the perfrmance
Needs are interpreted individually
Religion, economic conditions, personal beliefs and all change the lens of how you see things.
one person's need and their understanding of when that need is satisfied can be quite different from another person's interpretation.
BEATS
: Conscious shifting points in acting
Reminds the actor emotions and physical actions create expressive behaviour that contribute to the outcome of the objective.
A beat is signified by the following:
Your character’s introduction of a new subject
Your character’s attempt at a new Emotion Tactic
Your character’s attempt at a new Action Tactic
Motivated by character's thoughts, emotions and actions
Character Perspective Initiates Beat Shifts
When an actor breaks a scene into beats, its from the perspective of their own character
All beats happen for your character and by their own will
