The implementation challenge
Luces Nocturnas de Coatepec
First Impacts
Check whether visitors feel safe and emotionally connected to the forest.
Measure delays, equipment failures and trail-related incidents.
Observe whether visitors respect light and sound restrictions.
Record unexpected wildlife encounters or memorable sounds.
Resolving Unforeseen Problems
Problem: Heavy rain makes the trail slippery and unsafe.
Response: Stop the walk, move the group to a designated safe location and assess trail conditions. If necessary, cancel the outdoor portion and offer a guided acoustic session under shelter, with rescheduling options.
Purpose: Protect visitors while preserving the emotional connection with the forest through sound.
Conceptualization:
Sequence: 7:00 PM arrival and safety briefing → 7:30 PM guided forest walk → 8:00 PM directional audio listening → 9:00 PM nocturnal wildlife observation → 10:00 PM coffee and vanilla refreshments → 10:30 PM departure.
Roles: Certified bio-guide leads the tour; acoustics specialist manages audio equipment; ejido members maintain trails; local producers serve refreshments.
Sensory elements: Mist, cool air, forest sounds, darkness, headphones and coffee aromas.
Narrative: Discover the hidden life of the forest through sounds that visitors rarely notice.
Missing: A detailed rain protocol, emergency equipment procedures and a safe alternative route.
Refine and Relaunch
Introduce a clear weather-based operating protocol and test all audio equipment before departure. This will improve safety and reliability without losing the quiet, immersive atmosphere that makes the experience special.
Launch
Type: Soft launch, because nighttime terrain, sound equipment and weather require testing.
First visitors: Small groups of local nature enthusiasts and experienced hikers who can provide useful feedback.
Communication: Social media teasers featuring forest sounds, clear safety instructions, rain policies and realistic expectations about wildlife sightings.
