Products and Processes:
From Plants to Products.
Grade 3, Term 4 (DBE, 2011:57)
Natural Science
What we get from plants (DBE, 201:57)
Concept: Plants give us materials like fruit and humans make these into products. (DBE, 201:57).
Example: Sugar cane into sugar.
Class Activity: Learners sort images of everyday things into two columns -"comes from a plant" & "man made". (Davin, 2020: 233)
Skills: observing, classifying (Naude & Meier, 2025:100-108)
Materials can change (DBE, 2011:8)
Concept: When a natural material is processed is can change it's form into a new product.
Example: A lemon squeezed produces juice.
-
Skills: predicting,observing, comparing (Naude & Meier, 2025: 100-108)
Technology
-
Tools that process food.
Concept: People in factories and homes use tools to change raw materials like fruit into different products. (DBE, 2011:57).
Example: A grater turns cinnamon bark into powder.
Class Activity: Investigating two different types of lemon juicers, hownthey work and what the different pieces do.
Skills: Investigate (Naude & Meier, 2025:148-150)
Social Science
People who make our products (DBE, 2011:8)
Concept: Many people are in the chain that bring products to our homes: farmers, factory workers drivers, shop keepers. (DBE, 2011:8).
Class Activity: Bring in fruit or vetegtable packaging, e.g. sticker from a citrus or a packet from lettuce. We will explore which products are local and which are imported.
Where our products come from, around South Africa (DBE, 2011:45)
Concept: Sugar cane is from Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga (SASA, 2024), while citrus comes from Limpopo and the Western Cape.
Class Activity: Learners have a map of South Africa and a different food product from each province. They then map where is comes from. (A book or print out or lesson will be provided to help with the information they need to do this.)
Then and Now (Naudé & Meier, 2025:49–52)
Class Activity:Pictures of old juicing and farm equipment, side by side with modern day verisons and factory machines. (De Melendez et al., 2000)
