PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES
Grade 3 | Term 4 | Beginning Knowledge
NATURAL SCIENCE
From Sugarcane to Sugar
Key concept: Sugar is produced by processing sugarcane, which is a plant used as a raw material (DBE, 2011).
Inquiry activity: Examine sugarcane and sugar, describe how they differ, and place production pictures in the correct order.
Skills: Observing, comparing, predicting and sequencing.
From Clay to Bricks
Key concept: Clay from the ground can be moulded and processed to create bricks (DBE, 2011).
Inquiry activity: Feel and observe clay and a brick, compare their features, and predict how clay is changed into a building material.
Skills: Observing, comparing, predicting and classifying.
TECHNOLOGY
Designing and Making Products
Key concept: Products are planned and created to solve problems or fulfil people's needs (add a citation from a source consulted).
Inquiry activity: Sketch a plan for a small model structure, make it from safe recycled materials, and suggest improvements.
Skills: Planning, designing, making and evaluating.
Materials and Their Properties
Skills: Investigating, comparing and choosing materials.
Inquiry activity: Compare clay, cardboard and a brick, then select the most appropriate material for constructing a model wall.
Key concept: The characteristics of materials help determine what they can be used to make (add a citation from a source consulted).
SOCIAL SCIENCE
People Involved in Production
Key concept: Producing goods involves different workers, from people who collect raw materials to those who process and transport products (add a citation from a source consulted).
Inquiry activity: Study pictures of sugarcane farmers, sugar factory workers and brickmakers, and explain how their jobs contribute to production.
Skills: Observing, identifying roles and communicating.
Production Then and Now
Key concept: The ways people manufacture products may differ between the past and the present (add a citation from a source consulted).
Inquiry activity: Compare pictures of older and modern sugar or brick production and identify similarities and differences.
Skills: Comparing, sequencing and interpreting information.
CONNECTION BETWEEN THE DISCIPLINES
Natural Science investigates the raw materials and how they change. Technology considers the materials, tools and methods used to make products. Social Science examines the people and work involved in producing goods. Together, the three disciplines explain how raw materials become useful products.
