Sara Ahmed
Complaint
(2021)
If we're unsatisfied with formal pathways for complaint, what are other models/methods for documenting and acting on complaint work to create equity, safety, and access?
"we were formulating together a collective position that rejected" the hegemonic epistemes of the way the department was conceiving of violence (264).
revaluing horizontal critique and change
validation and support in mutual recognition: "networks of whispers passed between generation of students" (262)

Using evidence from Ahmed's relfection on complaint collectives, what forms of documentation and record keeping did that collective use? What did they refuse to use?
"Strategic Misogyny" (270) -- collecting shared accounts
anonymous report and refusal of formal complaint pathway (265).
refusing individualized reports; avoiding separating
fears of retaliation
"the institution would hand us over" (265)
professors can fail them, impact their degrees, it's a huge power imbalance
avoiding extra-curricular events (tutors, dinners, etc), and retaliation might come as the forms of soft exclusion and prioritizing other students
the impact is a sense of making oneself smaller for protection
TECHNICALLY you have access, but socially and psychically, one does not have access and cannot have FULL participation and reward
the feeling that the complaint work is harming those who are doing the harm (i.e protecting the faculty, the depaertment, the institution)
not providing a "specific" complaint because of the collective nature of the complaint
