Products and Processes
(Grade 3 Term 4)
2.Technology
3.Social Science
B: Products & Human Needs in communities
Activity: Product to source community mapping- learners match household items (sugar, paper, bricks) back to its natural resources (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
Concept 2: Communities depend on processed goods (e.g sugar for food, bricks for shelter) to fulfill daily survival and living needs (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025).
A: People, Work & Productions roles
Concept 1: Processing raw resources generates specialized roles (eg., farmers, factory workers, builders) that sustain community livelihoods (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
Activity: Production role play & assembly line- learners simulate factory and buiilding roles to investigate how worker collaboration turns raw materials into finished products (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025).
1.Natural Science
A:Plants (Sugarcane to sugar)
Concepts 1:Plants produce Raw materials(e.g., sugarcane) which are altered through heating and crushing to produce refined edible resources like sugar.
Activity: Sensory exploration and crystallization - Learners observe the raw sugarcane and compare it to refined sugar, learners then proceed to dissolve the sugar in warm water and observe the crystals form after a period of time. (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
B:The Earth (Clay to Bricks)
Concepts 2:Clay is an earth resource found in soil, it is then processed through molding, drying, and firing to construct bricks which is used to build buildings (DBE, 2011)
IActivity: Clay mold experiment: Press wet clay into containers or molds.Learners test how long it takes for the clay to dry and the clay strength after drying.(DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
A: Technology Processes & Tools
Concepts 1: Technology uses tools and structured steps (crushing, molding, heating) to transform raw materials into functional goods safely and efficiently (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier,2025)
Inquiry based activity: Tool exploration & Brick-molding task- learners use mould containers to shape clay into bricks, evaluating how using tools improves efficiency vs hand-shaping (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
B: Design Solutions for Human Needs
Concept 2: Technology tools are created to solve everyday human needs and to enhance daily living, such as using fired bricks to build strong, weather-resistant shelters. (DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
Activity: Model structure Durability Test: Students are formed into small groups to build mini model walls with their dry clay bricks and test their strengths under light weights (e.g., wooden block) to evaluate material stability.(DBE, 2011; Naude & Meier, 2025)
