Products and Process
Natural Science
Properties of Raw and Processed Materials
Key Concept: Raw materials like sugarcane is rough, fibrous, and wet, while sugar is fine, sweet and crystalline. Clay is soft and moldable, while brick is hard and rigid. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Sensory Exploration Station. Learners work in small groups to smell, touch and observe sugarcane vs sugar and clay vs brick. They will then record: "What does it feel like?", "What can i see and smell?" [Inquiry skill: Observing and comparing]. [2011'
Transformation and Changes of Materials
Key Concept: Materials go through physical changes when being processed, heating, drying, and crushing changes the form of the material and the properties become useful. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Prediction and observation. Ask questions such as: "What do you think will happen if we dry clay in the sun?", "What changes can you feel and see?". Learners will predict, then observe dried and fired bricks. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Social Science
Workers and Occupation in Production
key Concept: Different community workers are involved in making products, such as farmers who grow sugarcane and builders who make bricks. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Community roles picture sort. Show pictures and videos of sugar production and brick making. Ask the learners: "Who are the workers involved in making these products? What is their role?" Learners will sort and discuss with the teacher as a class. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Use of Products in Everyday Community Life
Key Concept: We use products like sugar for food and energy, and we use bricks for building homes, schools and hospitals, which are essential for community living. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Ask: "What do we use sugar and bricks for in our everyday life?", "How do communities use them differently?" Learners will then draw one use in their community that need the community to use sugar and bricks. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Technology
Processing Techniques - Molding and Crystalizing
Key Concept: Technology uses processes such as molding to shape the clay inro bricks and crystalizing to turn sugarcane juice into sugar. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Hands-on molding and touching. Learners will use playdough to mold their own bricks and use their hands to touch and feel sugar. Ask: "How do we get bricks from clay?", "How do we use sugar from sugarcane?" (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Tools, Technology and Saftey
Key-Concept: Tools and machines help to transform raw materials faster and safer, these tools and machines need safe handling. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
Inquiry-Based Activity: Tool exploration. Showing simple tools to the learners. Ask: "How does technology help transform materials?" "How does technology in these ways change the world?" learners will test which tool is best shaped for molding and sieving. (DBE, 2011 , p. 57).
