Products and Processes Life Skills ~ Grade 3
Term 4
Natural Science
Raw materials from plants and earth.
Inquiry activity- Learners sort sugarcane, sugar, clay, soil and brick by touch, sight and smell, then describe how they differ, then predict which raw material produced each product.
Skills- investigate, comparing, classifying
Key concept- Raw materials come from natural sources
(DBE, 2011; DBE, 2025, pp. 34–40)
How processing changes materials
Inquiry activity- Learners should predict, test and record what they observe on the question “How does adding water change clay?”. And compare wet clay, dried clay and a fired brick, predict what water will do to each, then test it
Skills- Experimenting, measuring, communicating, investigating and observing (Naude & Meier, 2020, p.104)
Key concept- Processing changes a material’s properties (energy and change). Raw materials undergo processes to produce useful goods. Sugarcane is pressed to extract juice, while clay is shaped, dried and fired to make bricks.
(DBE, 2025, pp. 36, 40)
Technology
1.Processes as sequences
Inquiry activity- Learners put picture cards of 'sugar cane to sugar' or 'clay to brick' in order and draw their own flow chart.
Skills- investigate, communicate.
Key concept- A process is a series of steps shown in a flow chart.
(DBE, 2025, pp. 36, 40)
2.Designing and making a product from Clay
Inquiry Activity- Learners design, make and test clay bricks (with or without sand or straw)
Skills- Design, make, evaluate
Key Concept- Materials are chosen and shaped to meet a need.investigate, design, make, evaluate and communicate.
(DBE, 2011; DBE, 2025, p. 40)
Social Science
1.People who make products
Key Concept-Different workers depend on each other to turn raw materials into products
Inquiry activity-
Learners role play the workers in sugar or brick production and match each worker to a job
CAPS- Relationships and interdependence
(DBE, 2025, pp. 14–18)
Then & Now
Key concept- Ways of making things change over time
Inquiry activity- Learners compare old and new photos of brick making and interview an older community memeber.
CAPS concept- Change
(DBE, 2025, pp. 14–18, 20–22)
