Plants in our community
Jobs and farming
Key Concept: Sugarcane farming creates jobs. Farmers grow it, factory workers process it, drivers transport it, and shopkeepers sell it. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2013)
Key Concept: In our community we use plants every day. We use sugar in food, wood to build houses, and straw from plants to make bricks stronger.
Technology
Products made from plants
Steps to make sugar
key concept: Making sugar has 4 technological steps: cutting the cane, crushing to get juice, boiling the juice, and drying to get crystals. Each step needs tools.
Activity: Sequence Cards. Give 4 pictures: cut cane, crush cane, boil juice, get sugar. Learners put in correct order.
Inquiry Question: What happens if we skip the crushing step? What comes first and what comes last?
Key concepts: People use tools and machines to change plants into products. Wood is cut and shaped into furniture. Leaves and cotton are woven into clothes.
Activity: Make a mini-product. Learners use dried leaves, sticks and paper to build a small model house on newspaper.
Inquiry Question: What can we use that will be the strongest for building? What tool do you need to cut it?

How plants change
Key concept: When sugarcane is processed, its properties change. The juice is boiled and water evaporates, leaving sugar crystals. This is called crystallising. (Naudé & Meier, 2025)
Activity: Taste and Compare. Give learners a small piece of raw sugarcane and a spoon of sugar. Show video of boiling juice.
Inquiry Question: What is the same and what is different between the stick and the sugar? What changed?
Key concepts: Plants give us food, wood, fibre and oxygen. Sugarcane is a grass plant that gives us sweet juice. Trees give us wood for building. (DBE, 2011)
Activity: Sorting and Observing. Put 8 items on table: sugarcane stick, white sugar, wooden spoon, paper, cotton ball, apple, dry leaf, straw. Learners touch, smell, look.
Inquiry Question: Which of these objects come from a plant? How would you know? How does it feel?
