PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES
Grade 3 | Term 4
Beginning Knowledge (BKN 102)
Integration of Natural Science, Technology and Social Science
1. NATURAL SCIENCE (NS)
-
Key concept: Raw materials are materials obtained from nature that people use to make products. Sugarcane is used to produce sugar, while clay is used to make bricks.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners observe sugarcane, sugar, clay and bricks. They compare the materials by looking at their colour, texture and appearance.
Science process skills: Observing, comparing and describing.
-
-
-
Key concept: Raw materials can be processed to produce useful products. Clay is shaped and fired to make bricks, while sugar is produced by processing sugarcane.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners compare clay with a finished brick and sugarcane with sugar. They draw the materials and explain the differences they observe.
Science process skills: Observing, comparing, predicting and communicating.

3.SOCIAL SCIENCE (SS)
subtopics
-
Key concept: Different people perform different jobs to produce, process and use goods.
Examples: Farmers grow sugarcane, factory workers help process sugar, and brickmakers produce bricks.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners examine pictures of workers and match each worker to their job. They discuss how these workers contribute to producing everyday goods.
Social Science skills: Identifying, observing, discussing and communicating.

-
-
Examples: Sugar is used in food and drinks, while bricks are used to build houses and schools.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners investigate where sugar and bricks are used in their community. They draw examples and discuss why people need these products.
Social Science skills: Identifying, investigating, comparing and communicating.

-
2. TECHNOLOGY
-
Key concept: People use tools, equipment and processes to transform raw materials into useful products.
-
Inquiry-based activity: Learners arrange picture cards showing the stages of brickmaking in the correct order, from collecting clay to producing a finished brick.
Technology skills: Investigating, sequencing and communicating.

-
Technology skills: Designing, making, evaluating and improving.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners design and build a small model house using safe recycled materials. They test whether their structure can stand without falling over.
Example: Bricks are used to build houses, schools and other structures.

THREE LEARNING AREAS
-
Technology: Learners explore the tools, processes and designs used to transform raw materials into useful products.
Social Science: Learners investigate the people, jobs and community needs connected to producing and using these products.
Integration: Learners discover how natural materials are processed using technology by people to produce goods that meet human needs.
