Perfect Modal Verbs
-
Use of "Can Have," "Could Have," "May Have," and "Might Have"
While "can have" refers to present or future possibility ("You can have another slice of cake"), it doesn't function as a perfect modal verb.
Could have suggests a past possibility that was realistically achievable but may or may not have happened. It often conveys a sense of missed opportunity or regret.
May have indicates a past possibility that's less certain than "could have." It expresses a hunch or speculation without strong evidence.
Might have is similar to "may have" but suggests an even weaker chance of something happening in the past.
