Natural Sciences
Sub-topic 1
-
Concept 1
It provides unprocessed materials that can be produced into useful products. (DBE, 2011:57; Halen et al., 2010)
The learners examine a piece of? They observe touch and compare the materials and discuss how one material can be transformed into another product.

Technology
-
Technology involves using materials, tools and processes to solve problems and make useful products. (Naude & Meier, 2025:112-118), ITEA, 2000)
Class Activity
The learners investigate different materials and design a simple model showing how a raw material can be transformed into a useful product. Using e.g. flower, water, food colouring, rectangle moulder.
Class Questions
What could we make from this material? How can we change or what can be added to the material to make it useful?

Natural Science helps learners understand the materials and how they change. Technology helps learners investigate how materials can be designed, changed and used to make products. Social Science helps learners understand the people, workers and communities connected to these products. (DBE, 2011:57; Naudé & Meier, 2025:112–118)

Materials produced from earth such as clay can be changed and shaped to make useful products such as bricks, stones and lentils.(DBE, 2011:57; Harlen et al., 2010)
-
The learners investigate dry and moist clay. They can touch, observe and compare the materials and investigate with clay it is easy to shape .

-
The learners design and make small rocks and model rectangle bricks using clay / play dough and simple mould.

Products made from natural resources are used by people in different ways in their communities. (DBE, 2011:57)
The learners explore and examine pictures of people working in the sugar and brick production making, and discuss what each worker does in the production / processing part.(P43, )

-
The learners sort pictures of products according to their uses and discuss how sugar and bricks are used in our everyday life.
