Products and processes
Natural sciences
Sub-topic 1:Raw plant based materials
Key concept: What is sugarcane?
Sugarcane is a perennial grass which has a stalk that contains a sweet juice which is extracted and processed into sugar.( Crop Farming, no date)
Inquiry-based activity:
Learners are given a sugarcane stalk and in small groups will observe and identify the way it looks and smell and record it on paper.
Sub-topic 2: Raw earth based materials
Key concept: What is clay?
Clay is a fine-grained earth derived material which has a soft mouldable texture and hardens completely when heated. (Glazy, no date)
Inquiry-based activity:
Learners will be given different types of soil to investigate such as dry soil, wet clay and dried clay to test texture and record findings.
Social sciences
Sub-topic 1: Needs of resources in a community
Key concept: Influence of sugarcane farming
Sugarcane farming contributes to a community through job creation, nutritional, social and agricultural revenue. ( Studocu,no date)
Inquiry based activity:
Learners will be provided with cards of each worker needed in sugarcane farming and will then discuss and identify what role each worker plays,e.g. farmer for harvesting crops.
Sub-topic 2: Brick manufacturing impact
.
Key concept:
Brick manufacturing creates jobs in a community and provides durable materials that builds schools and houses, and are long-lasting. ( Clay Brick, no date)
Inquiry-based activit
y: The learners will take a walk around the school and observe buildings made from bricks versus other materials. This reinforces the concept of bricks being durable.
Technology
Sub-topic 1:Raw plant material
Sugar is a consumable processed from the raw material of the sugarcane. The process involves the sugarcane stalks been cut and crushed to extract the sweet juices. The sweet juices are then purified and prepared for crystallisation which is how we get sugar crystals. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2026)
Inquiry-Based Learning Activity
: Learners are given a set of cards with the different steps on sugar manufacturing. They will have to work in a small group to identify and sort the cards in the correct chronological order as the process.
Sub-topic 2: Raw earth material
Key concept- How is brick made?
: The raw material clay is extracted from the soil, moulded/shaped, dried under the sun and finally added to fire to remove all moisture making it durable for construction.( Brick construct,no date)
Inquiry-Based Learning Activity:
For the activity learners will be given air-dried clay to engage in a similar process as the brick making. They will have to mould a piece into a brick shape and wait for it to air dry.
