Luther Challenges the Church
Martin Luther became a monk and a teacher
Until his death he taught scripture at the University of Wittenberg in the German state of Saxony
Luther wrote the 95 Theses, which were formal statements and posted them on the door of the castle church
Invited other scholars to debate him
Luther's words were copied and taken to the printer
With support of the printing press Luther's ideas soon were advertised to people all over Germany
Actions began the Reformation, and led to the founding of Christian churches that didn't accept the pope's authority
Johann Tetzel was raising money to rebuild St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome by selling indulgences, otherwise known as a pardon
This released a sinner from performing the penalty that a priest imposed for sins. Tetzel gave the impression that buying indulgences allowed people to buy their way into heaven
Luther soon went beyond criticizing indulgences
Wanted a full reform of the Church
People could receive salvation only by faith in God's gift of forgiveness
Church taught faith and "good works" were needed for salvation
All Church teaching should be clearly based on the words of the bible
Both pope and Church traditions were false authorities
All people with faith were equal
People didn't need priests to interpret the bible for them
Religion
How committed was Luther really to spreading the teachings and the religion?
Learned that Luther was led to becoming a monk through fear due to being caught in a terrible thunderstorm
