Communicable Diseases By: Lauren Witt
Koch's Postulates
Bacteria must be present in the case of disease
Bacteria must be isolated from the host and grown in pure culture
Disease must be reproduced when in a healthy susceptible host
Bacteria must be recoveravle from the infected host
Transmission
Person to person
Airborne, Droplets, Contact
Influenza, Gonorrhea, Chickenpox
Animal species to human
Ex: Rabies, avian flu, anthrax, and bubonic plaque
Physical environment to humans
Water/Food, Air Exposures
Measurements for Prediction
Ro (R naught)
Measures the average number of infections by an infected individual
When greater than 1, this means that on average more than 1 person is infection from an infected individual
Herd Immunity
Level of effective protection, or the population immunity
Super Spreaders
Recognized to infect a large number of individuals. They play a huge role in transmission and may be underestimated
Tools Used to Help Address Disease
Barrier protections such as isolation and quarantine
Screening and contact tracing
Immunization and designed to protect populations as well as individuals
Antibiotic and antiviral treatment
Elimination and eradication
Vaccinatons
Inactivated Vaccinations
Dead virus
Attenuated Vaccines
Live virus
Messenger RNA (mRNA) Vaccines
Produces a response against a foreign protein or antigen that would normally be produced by a pathogen or a cancer cell
Virat Vector Vaccines
Deliver genetic materia coding for a desired protein or antigen into the host cells
