DISEASES OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM - Coggle Diagram
DISEASES OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Lymphatic system
Primordial lymphatic system begins to develop
during the 6th week of intra uterine life
Lymphatic system has three components :
Lymphatic vessels.
Lymph nodes.
Terminal Lymph capillaries.
Terminal Lymph capillaries :
Absorb lymph, macromolecules, cells
microbes from tissue into lymphatic system.
High porosity.
Lymphatic vessels:
collect and transport lymph
Lymph nodes :
Filters lymph
maintain immunity
Thoracic duct:
single in the left side, join the jugular viens
Right Lymph duct.
Both ducts contain valves to prevent back flow
Lymphatic distribution
Lymphovenous connection occurs at
jugular
and subclavian level.
lymph nodes level
Lymphatics are absent in
CNS
cartilage
cornea
tendon and muscles
epidermis
Function of lymphatics
Macromolecules and microbes are filterd at nodal level .
In GIT fats absorbed directly through lymphatics.
Filtration of intravascular protiens.
LYMPHOEDEMA
Primarily due to defective lymphatic drainage.
Increase in Protien rich Interstitial fluids.
It is acummulation of fluids (lymph) in the extravascular and extra cellular fluid compartments ,commonly in the subcutenous tissue.
PRIMARY LYMPHODEMA
Commonly in females.
Left side. Lower limbs.
Can be Familial :
Turner syndrome
klinefelter syndrome
down syndrome
TYPES
Lymph oedema parecox :
At puberty, 2 to 35 years
Lymphoedema Tarda :
In adult life , >35 years
Conjental lymphoedema :
At birth <2 years
Parecox vs Tarda
SECONDARY CAUSES
Flarial lymphoedema.
Post radiotherapy lymphoedema
Surgery
Ingunal lymph node dissection in skin cancer.
Axillary Lymph nodes clearance following mastectomy in breast cancer.
Bacterial infections :
TB
syphilis
Trauma
Rare causes :
DVT
snakes bites
rahumatoid arthritis
