cognitive - overview
cognitive bias -
-
-
the idea that humans make errors in ‘their thinking’ this is to allow us to process lots of information quickly the brain uses heuristics, mental shortcuts that can lead to errors or misjudgements.
Hostile attribution bias - when you believe someone is being hostile towards you depending on their actions.
types of priming
repetition - seeing a stimulus before makes it easier to recognise or process the same stimulus later
semantic - a stimulus makes it easier to process a later stimulus because they have a similar meaning
-
-
assumptions:
internal mental processing - cognitive processes in body all work together (perception, attention, memory, language)
computer analogy - our mind can be compared to computers (input, process, output)
memory - the process of encoding, storing, and recalling
Multi store memory model
STM - Holds information for a short period (around 20-30 seconds) e.g a phone number, list of words, instructions.
LTM - Stores information for a long time (possibly a lifetime) e.g facts, skills, experiences, knowledge.
sensory - A very brief store that holds information for a fraction of a second. E.g the flash of light, a sound, a smell
