Japan
Rise of militarism
Military Extremism - The military viewed civilian politicians as pro-Western and weak. Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi was assassinated in 1932 by naval officers after criticizing military actions in Manchuria; light sentences for the killers marked the end of party-led democracy and established military rule under Admiral Makoto Saito.
1931 Manchurian Invasion & Manchukuo
Political Corruption & Fragility - Democratic parties were heavily tied to Zaibatsu (large business conglomerates), causing widespread bribery scandals.
Economic Crises - Post-WWI overproduction, agricultural price collapses, and the 1929 Great Depression decimated Japanese exports, causing famine in rural areas. The public blamed the civilian government.
Military rule
* Kwantung Army Action: In Sept 1931, Kwantung Army officers staged an explosion on the South Manchuria Railway (Mukden Incident) as a pretext to conquer Manchuria without imperial/civilian consent.
* Establishment of Manchukuo: Installed former Qing Emperor Pu Yi as puppet leader (1932/1934) to secure vital iron ore, coal, and agricultural resources.
