Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems: My Childhood
Microsystem
Schools and Teachers
I started struggling with math and reading comprehension around 5th grade and needed extra help. My teachers and tutors supported my academic development and my friendships helped me build social confidence.
Family Friends
I grew up with family friends that I have known since my early childhood. These friendships helped me develop social skills and build lasting relationships.
Parents and Brother
I lived with my parents as an only child until my brother was born when I was 12 years old. My parents shaped my values, and having a brother meant adjusting to a new family dynamic.
After-School Activities
I participated in activities like cooking, home economics, and woodworking. These activities helped me learn practical skills and explore interests outside the classroom.

Family and Neighbor
My parents sometimes relied on our neighbor, who was also my family friend's mom to help with my morning transportation. This shows how my family's relationship with our neighbor helped support my school routine
Family and Grandmother
When my grandmother visited from her country, she helped take care of me in the mornings and walked with me to a meeting spot for school drop-offs. This shows how my extended family was connected to my daily routine and helped support my parents.
Parents and School
Since both of my parents worked, they arranged for me to attend an after-school program. This shows how my family and school were connected to make sure I had supervision after school.

My parents' jobs
Both of my parents worked, so their schedules affected my childcare arrangements before and after school. Even though I wasn't involved in their workplaces, their schedules influenced my daily routine.
School Programs and Fees
My school offered extracurricular activities that required an additional fee. Decisions about these programs and their costs affected which activities I could participate in.

Language at Home
My parents expected me to speak our family's preferred language at home because they said they didn't understand me when I spoke English. This shaped how I communicated at home and how I used language in different settings.
Family Traditions
My family celebrated Thanksgiving and birthdays, opened Christmas presents at midnight, and included Santa in our Christmas traditions. These traditions gave me special family memories and helped me feel connected to our family customs.
Prayer
My mom and I prayed together every night before bed. This became part of my daily routine and gave us time to connect.
Family Values
My parents taught me to be responsible, do my homework, consider other people's feelings, think before speaking, respect adults, and be careful around strangers. These lessons shaped my behavior, decision-making, and how I treated others.

My brother being born
My little brother was born when I was 12 years old, which changed me from an only child to an older sibling. I had to adjust to a new family dynamic and sharing my parents' attention.
Moving Houses
My family moved several times while staying in the same general area. These experiences required me to adjust to different living environments while also remaining in a familiar community.
Academic Challenges
Around 5th grade, I started having more difficulty with math and reading comprehension and needed extra help. This experience showed me that I sometimes needed extra academic support as I continued through school.
Moving to Another State in 2021
My family moved to another state in the middle of my 4 years of high school. Moving during this stage of my life meant adjusting to a new environment and affected some of my friendships, school experiences, and sense of belonging.
