PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES
TECHNOLOGY
Sub-topic 1:Tools used to process grapes
Inquiry-based activity: Which tool can help us make juice from grapes?
Why do we need a container?
Key concept: Tools assist people in the execution and processing of raw materials such as grapes. Different tools may be used to to squeeze, crush or filter grape juice.
Sub-topic 2:Designing and making a grape juice collection system:
Key concept: Technology is the process of identifying a problem choosing the right materials, designing and building a solution and then evaluating how well it works. (Refer to the life skills text book)
Inquiry- based activity: Learners design a simple model for collecting the liquid from crushed grapes using safe classroom recyclable materials. They will first draw their ideas, select the recyclable materials they intend to use, make a model under the teacher's guidance the test if the model can direct liquid into a container without spilling.
Guiding questions: Which recyclable material can work best?
How can we test our design?
NATURAL SCIENCE
Sub-topic 1: Grapes as a raw material
Key concept: Grapes are raw materials because they are natural unprocessed substances used as the starting point in the manufacturing process to produce a finished product such as grape juice
Inquiry bases activity: Learners observe different grapes such as the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage then compare the different grapes according to their shape, texture and colour and predict what will happen when they squeeze the grapes
Guiding Questions:
What will happen if we squeeze the grapes?
What similarities do the grapes have?
Sub-topic 2:Changes from grapes to juice
Inquiry-based activity: Learners can squeeze the grapes using their hands then compare the grapes before and after pressing then record their results sing simple drawing.
Guiding questions: What happened to the grapes skin and seeds?
what changed after the grapes were squeezed?
Key concept:
SOCIAL SCIENCE
Sub-topic 1:People involved in the production of grape juice
Key concept: Different people play a pivotal role in the growing, processing, packaging and selling of the finished product.
Inquiry-based activity:
