Negotiating Religiosity and Sexual Identity Among Hispanic Lesbian Mothers
Interviews focused on religion, sexuality, spirituality, and motherhood
All participants came from Catholic backgrounds
The researcher interviewed 15 Hispanic lesbian mothers in Texas
The Study
Identity conflict
Catholicism often defines a “good mother” as heterosexual, feminine, and religious
Lesbian mothers may face rejection from their families, churches, or cultural communities
They must navigate sexism, racism, and heterosexism
Negotiating Religion
Women criticized hypocrisy within the Catholic Church
They rejected the idea that same-sex love was sinful
Many separated their belief in God from Church authority
They kept the beliefs that supported love, morality, and acceptance
Spirituality
Most women identified as spiritual rather than strictly religious
They continued praying and practicing Catholic traditions
Spirituality allowed them to maintain faith without accepting anti-LGBTQ teachings
Motherhood and Children
Motherhood helped the women appear more accepted in religious and cultural settings
They taught their children morality and religious traditions
Most allowed their children to choose their own religion as they grew older
Their experiences may not represent all Hispanic lesbian mothers
Limitations
The study had only 15 participants
All lived in Texas and were mainly of Mexican descent
Their experiences may not represent all Hispanic lesbian mothers
