PLAN 2
Alternative Path 1:
Starting a business--specifically a shop
Step 1: Deciding on what business I'd be curious about
reptile store?
Trading card store?
Go work there!
Need to develop some first-hand experience. Well, a lot more than "some."
Maybe even work at multiple shops
business model
Retail sales? memberships?
events?
online sales?
i.e. figure out main revenue drivers
Build business plan
Estimate rent, inventory, payroll, insurance, utilities, equipment, etc
Test the idea!
Start online if applicable
Get funding, maybe some business partners
Open a small space first, after doing market research for ideal geographical locations
Cafe of some sort?
Why a shop?
I like the idea of providing something very tangible and creating a physical space that people enjoy.
Alt Path 2: Work independently as a consultant
Why?
I think, given the privilege, being able to choose what (corporate) problems to solve would be fun
step 1: gain work experience
find a specialty:
first find work in PR, branding, social media, event logistics, whatever
step 2: build a portfolio
i.e. keep very meticulous notes of my accomplishments
try to do some small freelance projects on the side
I don't want to jump straight into the deep end; I should build a small base of clients first
build a network! maybe rely on former coworkers, clients, local businesses, etc
Create a professional identity, individually of my full-time job
Transition gradually!
maybe once my freelance income becomes consistent can I make the full transition
What do I want to focus on?
maximizing income?
autonomy and work-life balance?
doing meaningful work?
Alt Path 3:
horizontal move into hospitality
Why?
Perhaps I don't like my dad's company, but I can still leverage the same skills and knowledge, just from the other side of the coin
Figure out what side of hospitality I'm most interested in!
transition/start in an operational role
e.g. services, front office, sales, venue ops
rotate through multiple roles/departments
Need breadth
and
depth!
eventually settle in management/leadership at the venue
perhaps even transition back to EEG (current company) with newfound, "external" knowledge and skills, thus providing a valuable new perspective!
