TECHNOLOGY
π οΈ 1. Ways to Save Water
Content / Key concept:
Simple tools and systems can help people use water carefully.
Examples include taps, buckets, watering cans and rainwater containers.
Key concept: Technology can help people solve problems and save resources.(DBE, 2011)
Activity:Learners design and draw a water-saving tool that could be used at home or school, such as a container for collecting rainwater.
Skills:Designing, drawing, problem-solving and communicating ideas.
π§οΈ 2. Collecting and Storing Water
Content / Key concept:
Water can be collected and stored for later use.
Containers can be used to collect rainwater.
A suitable container should be strong, clean and able to hold water.
Key concept: Objects can be designed to collect and store resources.(DBE, 2011)
Activity:Give learners different pictures of containers. Learners identify which containers could be used to collect water and explain their choices.
Skills:Identifying, comparing, selecting and problem-solving.
3.
π¨βπ©βπ§ SOCIAL SCIENCE
π° 1. Saving Water
Content / Key concept:
Water is a limited and important resource.
People should avoid wasting water.
We can save water by turning off taps, using only the water we need and reporting leaking taps.
Key concept: People have a responsibility to use water wisely.(DBE, 2011; Department of Water and Sanitation, 2023)
Activity:Give learners pictures of different actions, such as turning off a tap and leaving a tap running. Learners identify the responsible action and explain why it saves water.
Skills:Decision-making, communication and understanding responsibility.
π 2. Water in Our Community
Content / Key concept:
Communities need water for homes, schools, gardens and other daily activities.
People get water from sources such as taps, rivers, dams and rain.
Clean water is important for healthy communities.
Key concept: Water is an important community resource.(DBE, 2011)
Activity:Learners discuss where their families get water and look at pictures of different water sources. They draw one water source found in their community.
Skills:Observation, communication, identifying and describing.

π± NATURAL SCIENCE
π§ 1. Uses of Water
Content / Key concept:
People, animals and plants need water to live.
Water is used for drinking, washing, cooking and watering plants.
Key concept: Water is essential for life.(DBE, 2011)
Activity:Learners look at picture cards showing different uses of water and sort them into βuses waterβ and βdoes not use water.β They explain why water is needed in each example.
Skills:Observation, classification and communication.
βοΈ 2. Water in Different Forms
Content / Key concept:
Water can be found as a liquid, solid (ice) and water vapour.
Heat can change water from one form to another.
Key concept: Water can change its form.(DBE, 2011; Department of Water and Sanitation, 2023)
Activity:Show learners ice and liquid water. Let them observe and discuss what happens when ice is left outside the freezer. Learners draw the two forms they observed.
Skills:Observation, describing and comparing.
