how should we act to influence positive change?
diversity + psychology safety = better ideas, better decisions
katherine phillips
diversity is a trigger
--> makes people dig deeper, work harder, question themselves
--> better outcomes
discomfort with people who are different feels hard but it is a muscle to develop
instead of looking for similarities, look for differences / unique stories
what small change can we make as individuals to capture the benefits of diversity?
are we actually taking advantage of the diversity we have?
is there a causal relationship between surface level differences and the ability of a group to benefit from different perspectives?
cicero
something that is beneficial or profitable is never truly in our interest if it is morally wrong
right vs expedient:
right = morally just
expedient = useful / advantaged / profitable
people justify dishonesty or exploitation bc it benefits them / company / career
ex: misleading customers for profits isnt genuinely beneficial
refuse to treat profit or personal advantage as an excuse for wrongdoing
lao tzu
good leadership comes from humility, simplicity, patience, and working with the natural flow (not control)
ex: give autonomy, remove obstacles, let people contribute their ideas
influence doesnt always require power of force. sometimes the strongest leadership is subtle, humble, empowering
empowerment builds trust which leads to better outcomes
intentions aren't enough, systems and accountability matter
lily zheng
orgs know what works for fairness and exclusion but struggle to implement it consistently
they need to identify barriers, use evidence, hold people accountable, and make fairness part of normal processes
dont assume resistance means change is impossible, understand source and find practical solutions

psychological safety = belief u can speak up, ask questions, admit mistakes, or disagree without being humiliated or punished
safety enables honesty
honesty leads to better decisions
not about avoiding conflict / lowering standards
people should still be held accountable
openness leads to better learning, innovation, problem solving
adam grant
we get attached to beliefs and defend them instead of questioning if they are correct
preacher - defend what we believe
prosecutor - attack others arguments
politician - seek approval
alternative- think like a scientist, treat beliefs as hypotheses
intellectual humility- being intelligent doesnt mean being right
ethics - do what is right even when it is hard (cicero)
humility - lead by empowering, not controlling (lao tzu)
psychological safety - let people speak up without fear (gallo)
open mindedness - question ur assumptions, be willing to change (grant)
diversity - diff perspectives lead to deeper thinking (phillips)
actions and systems - turn good intentions into real change!!!! (zheng)
