Carbon and It's Compounds
Properties of Carbon
very versatile
have valency 4 - hard to gain or lose
form covalent compounds (sharing electrons)
functional groups
alcohol - oh -ol
aldehyde - h, double bond o - al
carboxylic acid - oh, double bond o - oxylic acid
ketone - double bond o, 2 free valencies - one
alkene - double bond c - ene
alkyne - triple bond c - yne
Chemical Properties
Combustion
Unsaturated - burns with smoke, sediments. Saturate
Saturaed - clean burning. Need enough oxygen
Oxidisation
oxidises when agent is added. alcohol to carboxylic acid
Addition
change into saturated when catalyst (nickel and palladium) are added
used in vegetable oil hydrogenation
Substitution
Cl replaces H(sunlight)
Ethanol
