RULES
Graph Curves
d-t flattening ➔ Speed decreasing
d-t steepening ➔ Speed increasing
v-t leveling off ➔ Constant speed / Terminal velocity
Distance & Area
Area under v-t line = Distance
Exam Justification: "Area under the graph is greater"
Key Formulas
Avg Speed (X to Y) = Δx / Δt
Gradient (Slope) = Rise / Run = Acceleration
Uniform vs. Non-Uniform Acceleration
Uniform Acceleration
Definition: Acceleration at a constant (steady) rate
Graph Shape: Straight line on a speed-time or velocity-time graph.
Example: Free fall under gravity without air resistance (g10m/s2).
Non-Uniform Acceleration
Definition: Acceleration at a varying rate.
Graph Shape: Curved line on a speed-time or velocity-time graph
Example: Falling object with air resistance (acceleration decreases until terminal velocity is reached)
Speed & Velocity
Speed (v)
Definition: Distance moved per unit time.
Formula: AverageSpeed=DistanceMoved/TimeTaken (v=s\t).
SI Unit: Metres per second (m/s).
Quantity Type: Scalar (has magnitude/size only, no direction).
Velocity (v)
Definition: Speed in a specified direction
Quantity Type: Vector (has both magnitude and direction)
Representation: Shown with arrows or +/- signs for motion in a straight line.
Acceleration & Deceleration
Acceleration (a)
Definition: Rate of change of velocity over time.
Formula: a=vt\=ChangeinVelocityTimeTaken.
SI Unit: Metres per second squared (m/s2)
Vector Nature: Direction is indicated by a sign (+ for increasing velocity).
Deceleration (Retardation)
Definition: Decrease in velocity over time.
Representation: Treated as negative acceleration (e.g., -3m/s2).
Motion Graphs
Distance-Time Graphs
Gradient (Slope): Equal to Speed
Horizontal Line (Zero Gradient): Object is Stationary (at rest).
Straight Sloped Line: Object is moving at a Steady (constant) speed
Curved Line: Object is moving with Changing speed (accelerating or decelerating).
Speed-Time & Velocity-Time Graphs
Gradient (Slope): Equal to Acceleration.
Area Under the Line: Equal to Distance Travelled
Horizontal Line: Steady speed / Zero acceleration.
Upward Sloped Line: Acceleration (speed increasing)
Downward Sloped Line: Deceleration / Retardation (speed decreasing)
