nervous system - Coggle Diagram

- - - - faster reflex bypassing brain, responds from the spinal cord (automatic, unconscious response)
      - steps:
        
        step 1 - sensory receptors (peripheral nervous, somatic) detect the stimuli
        
        step 2 - sensory neurons transmit the (electrochemical) message TO the central nervous system/spinal cord
        
        step 3 - interneurons (in the spinal cord) send the message to the motor neurons
        
        step 4 - motor neurons transmit the message AWAY from the central system (the message is transmitted to the peripheral nervous system)
        
        step 5 - muscles (in the somatic nervous system) perform action
        
        step 6 - a slower sensory message is carried to the brain, where a conscious response may be initiated (eg. pain is felt)

      - step 3 - the brain receives the message, decides + initiates a response

        heart rate increases - to pump more blood
        
        blood pressure increases (redirection of blood to more important organs - so that a person is prepared to run)
        
        digestion decreases (non-essential)
        
        increased adrenaline (and cortisol)
        
        increase release of glucose in the blood stream - to give more energy
        
        decrease salivation
    - - balance/homeostasis - maintain the internal environment steadily, normal functioning
      - it dominates most of the time
      - post-activation of sympathetic nervous system, it would take longer to return the body back to normal functioning due to ^^ all remaining responses
    - - gut
      - functions - absorb nutrients using the gut microbacteria
      - interacts with the immune system
