what we learnt about waves - Coggle Diagram
what we learnt about waves
Lesson 1 - Introduction
In this unit we were introduced to the idea that waves can help us communicate and see things. Some examples are gravitational waves, infrasound waves/animal communication, Mexican waves and x-ray
lesson 2- daily simple things that include a wave
Sound waves (what we hear)
Light waves (what we see)
Water waves (ocean waves)
Heat waves (felt as warmth from the sun or fire).
Although waves do not transfer matter, they can transfer energy so basically the particles doesnt move it only moves up and down it is the energy which moves creating the movement like beahaviour
lesson 4- what do waves do when they meet
what thappens when waves meet? This can be split into two different categories constructive waves and destructive waves
contructive wave is when both the trought and the crest of the waves meet at the exact same area this creates a larger wave
destructive wave this type of wave that happens when the crest of one wave meets the other trough. This can cause a smaller wave when equal opposite can cause cancelation of both oof the waves
what happens when a way reacheds a aboundary the wave is mostly
Reflection-when wave bounce back form the boundary
transmission- when the light passes throught the materail or elements
Absorption- the material absorbs the wave (taking thermal energy)
lesson 6 - ultra vs infra
Humans can hear the 20-20,000hz anyrthing below that mark is called infrasound and anything above is called ultrasound
lesson 8
lesson 5 - Measuring a Wave
waves can be measured in a 2 of waves such as using frequency, amplitude
equilibrium- is the resting postion of the wave this line is all ways calm and flat
crest - the highest point in a way is called the trought
trought- the lowest point in a wave
amplitude - the distance for the resting point to the trough/crest larger amplitude the more energy is in the wave
oscilllation- the one complete movement form the crest to trought also this is used to measure the wave
frequency - the number of complete waves passing a specific point int he wave measured in hertz F = 1/T
Wavelength - the distance from one point in the wave to another point. When wavelength increases frequency decreases
wave speed the wave speed is the distance a wave travels in a unit of time v = F x wavelenght
lesson 7 - what can we hear
Sound is a mechanical wave as a mechanical wave is a wave that requires a medium to travel and sound for space cannot be heard this is why we cannot hear
lesson 3
Some waves don't require a medium to travel through. What are these waves? Give an example.
electromagnetic waves
When discussing waves, what is a "medium"? Why is it important?.
A medium is the material through which a wave travels through
What is a mechanical wave? Give an example.
A mechanical wave is a wave that travels through a medium to transfer energy eg-Sound waves
What type of wave can carry sound, cause earthquakes, and move across the surface of water?
Mechanical waves
Explain what a seismic wave is.
Seismic waves are waves that are caused by earthquakes and move underground
Describe how sound travels as a wave.
Sound travels as waves the particles in the air move back and forth and allow this wave to travel through the air
