Financial problems

Food and basic products became more expensive
The cost of living rose by 45%
Wages rose by only 22%
Many people could not feed their families
Population growth
The population grew from 19 million to almost 26 million
There was not enough food for everyone
POLITICALLY
Absolute monarchy
Louis XVI was king from 1774
The king had a lot of power
He made laws and collected taxes
He controlled the army and justice
He could arrest people
No political power for the Third Estate
The nobles and the Church could advise the king
The Third Estate could not take part in government

France helped America against Britain
France spent a lot of money
French soldiers saw ideas of liberty and democracy
They wanted more freedom in France
SOCIALLY
Three social groups
Second Estate: the nobles
Third Estate: most of the people
They had no privileges
They paid most of the taxes
The bourgeoisie had money but little political power
Peasants paid taxes to the king, the Church and the nobles

They had many privileges. They owned land. They paid few taxes
