343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 38 Port Authority officers died helping others
Thousands of people were injured or got sick later because of the smoke and dust from the attacks
WHO WERE THE ATTACKERS?
The Terrorists: 19 men from the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda.
The Leader: Osama bin Laden led the group. He was killed in 2011.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Hijackings: Members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked commercial airplanes
The Twin Towers: One plane crashed into the North Tower and another into the South Tower in New York.
The Pentagon: Another plane hit the Pentagon building in Washington D.C.
Pennsylvania: A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania because the passengers tried to stop the hijackers. They wanted to attack the Capitol building in Washington D.C
