Mitigating PTFE decomposition in dry processed anodes
Current state and requrements
PTFE decomposes when anode is charged
PTFE is reduced to a conductive carbon specy that can result in short circuiting
PTFE is required in dry proccesing of anode films to provide film stability
Method
Add 10 wt% liquid FEC to anode to protect PTFE from reduction
Cell design
Use a liquid electrolyte coin cell
Graphite anode
LFP cathode
Result
PTFE is protected significantly more from reduction
Better cycling stability and higher discharge capacities
Recommendation
They provide none
They are mostly happy to share their results
Mechanisms
Protection
PTFE decomposition
Stable SEI formation FEC
PTFE decomposition
(CF2 − CF2)n + 4n Li+⇒ − (C ≡ C)n + 4n LiF
Downside PTFE reduction
Low ICE
Loss in mechanical strength
