Types Of Networks
PAN (Personal Area Network)
This network consists of personal, nearby devices.
This network has a maximum range of about 10 metres.
Generally uses Bluetooth to connect devices together.
Set up for personal use only.
An example of this network might be a phone connected to a pair of Airpods.
A disadvantage would be that the range is very limited.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
This network has a range of thousands of kilometres.
This network consists of multiple LANs connected together.
Generally uses the Internet, or satellite links to connect devices together.
Set up to allow multiple sites to communicate.
A disadvantage would be the constant need to protect against viruses and hackers.
An example of this network would be the Internet.
LAN (Local Area Network)
This network may consist of all computers in a room or floor of a building.
This network has a range of a few kilometres.
Generally uses Ethernet cables to connect devices together.
Set up to allow multiple users in a single area to share resources.
A disadvantage would be that the cabling needed is expensive.
An example of this network may be found in an office or a school.
