Accessibility & Access Intimacy in Mentoring
Using some key evidence from Mingus, how might we define "access intimacy"?
"elusive, hard to describe when someone else gets your access needs"
"the way your body relaxes and opens up when your access needs are met"
NOT a charity; thinking of it as a charity kills what access intimacy actually is
it's not just when you "help", but there's a mutual understanding
not always about being 100% accessible and RIGHT, but it's a premptive effort
What are the barriers to access intimacy at CC?
small housing and east campus
Western Ridge
fake buttons into El Pomar??
"Access needs"
super wide ranging, and there's no ONE accomodation that would ever cover all disabilities
accessible learning for a wide array of learners
Mingus: "I don't always know them"
frequently changing: awareness of needs as they change in time and space
navigating field work/studio work/lab work
disabilities are socially and culturally constructed and contested;
HUGE range of backgrounds of learners in first year
What practices do we need to develop in our mentoring to center access intimacy?
Are we an attractive institution for scholars with physical disabilities?
avoiding doing "forced intimacy" where people with disabilities have to share deeply personal things to get their basic needs met
coming informed and prepping: naming the context event, how to get there, etc
being honest about your limits and connecting people with disabilities with appropriate resources
