  - - - The narrator often writes diaries in a way that makes Semplica girls the cause of the problem
    - - The author does not reveal what winning the lottery means to readers until the end of the story, maximizing the shock and the impact of the realization of the society's tolerance towards brutal tradition
        
        However, Jackson does give some clues in the beginning of the story to hint readers about stoning, such as when "Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones ... selecting the smoothest and roundest stones" ( Jackson 291).
  - - - Narrator writes in his diary "No money, no papers. Who will remove microline? Who will give her job? When going for job, must fix hair so as to hid scars at Insertion Points. When will she ever see home + family again? Why would she do> Why would she ruin it all, leave our yard? could have had nice long run w/us. What in the world was she seeking? What could she want so much, that would make her pull such desperate stunt?" as if he was being generous to help young girls with no where to go, when in reality, he was just using weak girls to elevate his social status.

        Makes his changed attitude even more devastating because narrator’s trauma that he always tried to stop got passed down to his kids.
    - - Shows people in the society's tolerance toward the tradition
  - - - Younger generation Ms. Summers seems tired of the tradition and prioritizes work over tradition when she says, "guess we better get started, get this over with, so we can go back to work" (Jackson 295).
      - When Bill Hutchison's family was chosen, a girl whispered, "I hope it's not Nancy" (Jackson 300). Though this just might be because Nancy was a friend, this scene pportraysyounger generations getting pressured emotionally w,hich will lead to the tradition changing when the younger generations grow up
      - However, Mr. Adams told Old Man Warner about the north village giving up the lottery, the older generation Old Man Warner called called the village "pack of crazy fools" ( Jackson 297).
    - - The narrator believes “we are losers, everything we do is wrong”. This shift in action immediately affects the family. The narrator writes in his diary, “Kids stunned. Kids have never seen me so mad” (156).
      - The narrator also let Jerry stay in his yard, disturbing narrator's family by smoking and humming until midnight because finding his assets was more important for the narrator than letting his kids go sleep.
