3) Arguments
Against:
- No-one has ever proven with numbers that killing murderers deters other people from committing similar crimes. (It doesn't stop crime).
- It is often more expensive to execute someone (because of all the trials and appeals) than to keep them in prison for life.
- Courts sometimes make mistakes. If you kill an innocent person, you cannot say sorry or bring them back
- It is cruel and inhuman. Two wrongs don't make a right
For:
- Some people believe that if you take a life, you should pay with your own life. "An eye for an eye."
- It makes sure that a dangerous killer can never hurt anyone again.
- Supporters believe it scares other people so they won't commit murder.
- If someone murders someone else, they have given up their human rights, including the the one to stay alive themselves.

2) Historical background
- The death penalty has been used for thousands of years all over the world. In the past, people were executed for many different crimes, even stealing.
- Now, many countries have stopped using it (abolished it). It is mostly used today in some parts of the US, Asia, and the Middle East.
