Earthquakes
Vibration is the Earth's crust caused by a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth'slithosphere
occur along plate boundaries, which contains systems of deep fractures in the Earth's crust

Volcanoes
-
Divergent
Decrease in overlying pressure causes underlying mantle material to melt, forming magma
Magma contains dissolved gases which makes it less dense--> rises to the Earth surface thru weak areas of the crust
erupts as lava--> causing volcanic eruption--> over time, lava lava cools, solidify and accumulate forming a volcanoe
Convergent
When denser plate subducts, high pressure forces water out of the plate--> water lowers melting point of overlying mantle-->forms magma
-
High silica magma
More viscous magma--> traps dissolved gases--> more pressure builds up--> violent, explosive eruptions-->associated with stratovolcanoes
Stratovolcanoes
Built by alternating layers of ash and lava--> high viscous magma travels shorter distance-->steep sides and narrow summit
Low silica magma
less viscous magma--> dissolved gases to escape easily--> less pressure builds up--> results in gentle and effusive eruption--> associate with shield volcanoes
