What can you do to help decrease the amount of food waste that is currently occurring
Use it up
Use your oven to dehydrate fruits that are no longer at there best.
Try to revive your food before you throw it away by using ice water to soak your veggies if they are wilted, or use stale bread or crackers as salad toppers when you bake or toast them.
Heat up honey, molasses, or maple syrup to get rid of the crystals that form.
Turn your leftovers into something new by turning cooked vegetables into soups or wraps and by adding extra proteins to your lunches.
Don't open food in packages before you plan to eat it because it is more likly to go off before you are able to finish it.
Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of the food being in the danger zone and eat them within 3 days.
Know the difference between best before dates and expiration dates: best before dates tell you when the food is no longer at its peak freshness, whereas the expiration date tells you when the food is no longer safe to eat.
Plan it out
Plan out the meals you are going to have this week and try plan to use up leftover ingredients in the coming week.
Look in your fridge and freezer before you shop to make sure you don't buy food you already have at home.
Make a list of all the Ingredients you are going to need and stick to it when out shopping.
Plan to make only the amount of food you are going to be able to eat.
Freeze dishes to eat later that week.
Keep grains, spices, and sauces that you like on hand so you can turn leftovers into something new and exciting.
Keep it fresh
Keep meats at the bottom of your fridge so avoid cross contamination.
Make sure to store your food in the correct way, store deli in the fridge, store frozen meals in the freezer, etc.
Make sure your fridge is set to 3C or lower.
