Power
Hate towards "foreigners" is weaponized by populists
People will get along without a god but they cant get along without a devil
White supremacy
This issue kills people but because its often people of color or non-Western populations it has a harder time meaningfully penetrating the mainstream
White nationalism
notions that a countries prosperity relies on cultural homogeneity
Conservatism, fear of change
Capitalism
Blaming immigrants for issues without addressing the root cause of why they need to leave their home countries in the first place, reasons often fueled by capitalist global exploitation
Social media- if there is no profitability to correcting misinformation and adjusting algorithms, social media companies will not do it. they may even do it more if its for the sake of a political ally
distraction from structural issues
Means of spread
Social media algorithms
Cognitive biases- people will see a few crimes perpetrated by people of color and assume that to be a wide-spread issue
Echo chambers- people's algorithms will feed them content they watch for a long time and engage with, thus if someone saw a anti migrant video they will only see more of them
deterioration of human rights
If a whole group of people can be discarded and told to go back to their country despite their lives being in danger, no one is meaningfully safe from that
Spread of individualism in popular culture
"you dont owe anyone anything"
Take care of yourself first
Capitalist mindset of competition, there are always winners and losers, we cant all live a good life
Scarcity mindset- if there is more people there will not be resources for me and my family
Main stream media
profit in the attention economy
