Influence of research paradigms
Research process
shapes entire research process & type of knowledge researcher generates
ensure coherently designed research
strengthen internal logic, make research design more transparent, defensible
align all aspects of project & maintain clarity throughout the study
without: mismatching methods & philosophical assumpstions=> invalid findings
ex: how the use of this tech affects student participation - realist approach vs relativist approach
Methodological choices
Positivists:
structured methods, mimic scientific method, quantitative (surveys, experiments)
Constructivists, social constructionists, interpretivists:
qualitative (in-depth interviews, participant observation, reflexive thematic analysis) => deep dive into participants' experiences & meanings
Pragmatists:
based on what best answers research question, often combine quali & quanti (pragmatic, problem-solving orientation)
Critical realists:
combine quali & quanti => explore surface phenomena & underlying social/structural mechanism
Research questions
positivism:
test hypotheses, measure variables, establish causal rlts or correlations
constructivist, social constructionist, interpretivist, critical realist:
explore meanings, experiences, perceptions of participants => focus on societal change/deeper understanding of lived e
pragmatism:
flexibility, design questions to solve specific problems
Findings
Positivist: objectivity and detachment, minimise researcher's influence on data=> objective truths/confirmed hypotheses
Constructivists, social constructionists, interpreteivists: engage in reflective practices to=> interpret nuanced meanings within data => insights into participants; perspectives, naratively/descriptive accounts
Pragmatist: practical outcomes, actionable insights=> highlights practical implications
Critical realists: what's happening &why, look for patterns (hidden structures/power relations)=> highlight/critiques underlying societal mechanism
