EMERGING
Ocean alkalinity enhancement (IPCC 2021): Adding alkaline substances to seawater to increase its total alkalinity, which neutralises H⁺ and raises pH. This also increases the ocean's capacity to absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.
Olivine dissolution:Olivine (Mg₂SiO₄) weathers: Mg₂SiO₄ + 4CO₂ + 4H₂O → 2Mg²⁺ + 4HCO₃⁻ + H₄SiO₄. This consumes CO₂ and produces bicarbonate, raising alkalinity.
Lime addition: Lime (Ca(OH)₂) dissolves: Ca(OH)₂ + 2CO₂ → Ca²⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻. This neutralises H⁺ and increases Ω.
:
Electrochemical methods: Electricity splits seawater: 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻. The OH⁻ increases alkalinity; H₂ can be captured as fuel.
