Alcohols
Boiling point:
-
Higher the no. of carbons, higher the molar mass, higher will be the boiling point.
As the branching increases, the boiling point decreases.
-
-
-
Solubility in water:
Lower alcohols are more soluble in water than higher alcohols due to formation of strong hydrogen bonds.
Tertiary alcohols are more soluble in water than secondary and primary alcohols because, as surface area decreases, solubility increases (if number of carbons are same).
Physical state: Lower alcohols are colorless liquids with characteristic smell. Higher alcohols are colourless waxy solids.
