food security - when people at all times have physical & economic access to sufficient, safe & nutritious foods to meet their dietary needs & food preferences for an active & healthy life

The Green Revolution
initial development was in Mexico in mid-1940s - semi-dwarf wheat increased whet yield per acre 4 fold from 1944-1970, became self-sufficient cereal grain producer by 1956
Initiated in India in 1960s to increase food production & feed the millions of malnourished people around the nation
semi-dwarf wheat doubled production in India & Pakistan in the 60s, wheat & rice became cheaper & calorie availability per person increased

key components - high-yielding varieties, agrochemicals, improved irrigation & mechanisation
HYVs characterized by a combination of traits like dwarfness, higher crop yield, improved response to fertilisers, early maturation & disease-resistance
socioeconomic impacts
costly new technologies only adopted by richer farmers who could afford them - high cost of inputs (seeds, fertilisers, pesticides) caused poorer farmers to fall into debt

environmental impacts
eutrophication - excess fertilisers get washed into water bodies or waterways, harmful algae blooms kill aquatic animals & contaminate seafood & drinking water
use of mineral fertilisers introduced vast amounts of reactive nitrogen & phosphorus into the environment
exposure to nitrogen compounds (e.g. nitrates in drinking water) can cause blue-baby syndrome, reproductive problems & some forms of cancer
seeds & technologies very dependent on extensive irrigation - caused groundwater levels to retreat where more water is being pumped for irrigation than it can be replenished by rain

in Green Revolution years of 1960s-70s, well-water irrigation in the Punjab region increased by 80%

when farmers over-irrigate, evaporation & transpiration of irrigation water eventually cause excessive amounts of water to accumulate in the soils - salinisation & eventual abandonment of farmlands
southwest Punjab's lowland areas, where water table is relatively shallow - intensive canal irrigation has waterlogged significant stretches of cultivated land
as of 1998, >430k acres of farmland in the state were waterlogged, leading to salinsation of the soil
public stockpiling
maintaining public stockpiles of essential food commodities is popular food policy for many govts, especially for countries with large populations or rely heavily on imports
ensure food insecurity caused by potential threats - climate change affecting agriculture, pandemics & geopolitical issues that can effect supply chains - are minimised
SG mandates stockpiling requirements for rice, but national stockpile now includes proteins (frozen chicken) & fibre-rich foods
authorities regularly conduct "churns" to keep stockpiles adequate & safe for consumption - older stocks are removed from stockpile & replenished
