The Eye

Internal Structure
Retina ♢☆
Innermost and light-sensitive layer of eyeball on which images are formed. Contains light-sensitive cells or photoreceptors (rods and cones) which are connected to the nerve endings from the optic nerve
Lens
Transparent, circular and biconvex structure, Is elastic and changes its shape/thickness to focus light onto the retina
Blind Spot
Region where optic nerve leaves the eye. Doesn't contain any rods or cones, hence, not sensitive to light. Can't see if image object falls on this spot.

How we see
- Light rays are refracted through the cornea and the aqueous humour in the lens
- The lens cause further refraction and the rays are brought to a focus on the retina
- The image on the retina stimulates either the rods or cones, depending on the intensity of light. The image formed on the retina is:
- upside down (inverted)
- laterally inverted
- diminished (smaller in size than the actual object)
Focusing/Accommodation ♢
The adjustment of the lens of the eye so that clear images of objects at different distances are formed on the retina

Focusing on Near Object
- Ciliary muscles contract, relaxing their pull on suspensory ligaments
- Suspensory ligaments slackens, relaxing their pull on the edges of the lens
- Lens, being elastic, becomes thicker and more convex
- Light rays from the near object are sharply focused on the retina
- Photoreceptors are stimulated
- Nerve impulses produced are transmitted by the optic nerve to the brain. The brain interprets nerve impulses, and the person sees the near object
Function: Regulates bodily functions and activities and how we react to the surroundings (responses to stimuli).

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Cranial Nerves (from the brain) + Spinal Nerves (from the spinal cord)
The Spinal Nerve contains both sensory and motor neurones. Hence, it is a 'mixed' nerve.

Sensitivity/ irritability: The ability to respond to a stimulus
Nerves: Bundles of nerve fibres which are strands of cytoplasm extending from cell bodies of neurones
